Gala 2017 Honors David & Melanie Worby
The Bedford Hills Free Library hosted a gala at the GlenArbor Golf Club on March 30, 2017, to honor Bedford philanthropists David and Melanie Worby. See photos from the event here.
In her opening remarks to the guests assembled, Terrie Paladino Viola, Co-President of the Library’s Board of Trustees, announced that the Worbys had recently pledged to donate $100,000 over a five-year period as lead sponsors of the Bedford Hills Free Library Early Literacy Initiative.
Early literacy begins with infancy, as a child weaves together sound, comprehension, and visual cues. Stimulating activities create a strong foundation for all forms of learning, and help prepare a child to read. The Bedford Hills Early Literacy Initiative will provide services and a pathway of family engagement, where children and adults learn together. These free programs and services are essential for all children, as is reaching out to those at heightened risk, such as English language learners and children from low-income families.
“David and Melanie Worby are champions of early literacy,” said Ms. Viola. “They share in our vision for this program and they understand how dedicated resources can have a significant impact on this library and the community we serve. Their generosity is going to change lives here.” Mary Esbjornson, the Library’s Executive Director, praised David and Melanie Worby. “We thank them for their generosity, concern for economic equality, and passionate leadership in helping the children and families of Bedford Hills.”

Contributions to our Annual Fund provide support for essential programs and services. While the Town of Bedford provides significant public funding for library operations, each year the Board of Trustees must seek additional contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations and community groups to balance our budget and support library programs or facility upgrades. Donors may give a gift in memory of a loved one and honor milestones. Ask your employer if there is a matching program and increase the impact of your contribution.
