Lending Policies

Are you eligible?
Adults who live, attend school, or own property in the Town of Bedford, are eligible for a library card from the Bedford Hills Free Library.
Adults who live in another town or village in Westchester County must get a card from their home library.

Children are eligible for a library card when they turn five years of age, with the parent/guardian responsible for their child’s use of the card.
Adults who live outside of Westchester County but work in Bedford Hills are entitled to get a card from the Bedford Hills Free Library.

Adults who live outside of Westchester County may purchase a library card directly from the Westchester Library System for a $75 annual fee. WLS has an application to print out from their website. Please fill out the Application and mail it directly to WLS with your payment. Your card will be mailed to you and is honored at all public libraries within the Westchester Library System.

Fill out an application – It’s easy!
Apply in person by filling out an application form and presenting a drivers’ license, State ID, or proof of residency in Bedford Hills, such as a utility bill or recently postmarked mail. You can get a head start by printing out our application from our website, filling it out and bringing it in with appropriate ID.
Parents/guardians visit the library with their child under 18, show proof of residency in Bedford Hills, and sign the application form filled out by the applicant.

Using your library card
With your Bedford Hills Free Library card you may borrow materials from this library as well as from any one of the 38 member libraries within the Westchester Library System (WLS). Go to: www.westchesterlibraries.org to search the library catalog, reserve, and renew. Downloadable ebooks, audiobooks and music are also available through the WLS.

How to check out and renew library materials
Present your library card to check out materials in person at the Bedford Hills Free Library.

Renew in person, by phone or log in online from home through the WLS catalog. You will need your library card barcode number and your personal identification number (PIN).

Place a hold on a book or other item
Place holds at the Bedford Hills Free Library or online at www.westchesterlibraries.org using your library card indicating the library where you will pick up the materials. Patrons will be notified when the item(s) become available. Loan items are held for 8 days before being returned to the owning library. This service is free to patrons but it does incur an expense to the library so please be sure to pick up your items

Replace a lost library card
Please report a lost card immediately. You may get a replacement card for $2.

Please let us know if you move so we can update your information. If you move within Westchester County please bring your card to your new home library with proof of residency. You will be issued a new card. If you move out of Westchester County please be sure to return all borrowed items and clear fines either in person or by mail.

Return Items Borrowed
Materials borrowed may be returned to any library that is part of the Westchester Library System unless specified otherwise. Items returned may be brought inside or placed in the drop box by the main entrance unless noted otherwise on the item.

Inter-Library Loans
Items may be borrowed outside of the Westchester Library System, e.g. college libraries, Library of Congress. Circulation time is 28 days, with no renewals. There may be a fee for this service; you would be notified beforehand. Late fine structure for this special loan is $2 per day. WLS reserves the right to refuse further use of this special loan request if item is not returned in its original condition and in a timely manner. Click here for more

Materials can be placed on hold (some exceptions) and renewed once except when another patron has the item on hold.

Lost or Damaged Items
The charge for unpaid lost items will appear on a patron’s record.  Checks for lost items should be made out to the owning library. In the event that the item is found after payment, money will not be refunded. Please report damaged materials upon return to the librarian for assessment.

Fines for books, magazines, or music CDs are 25 cents per day for adults and 10 cents per day for juveniles.
Fines for juvenile Holiday books is 25 cents per day.
Fines for DVDs, VHS and CD-Roms are $1 per day for adults and juveniles.
Maximum fine on all materials is $5.

Please pay fines promptly. When accumulated charges (fines, lost items etc.) reach $25, a patron’s card will be blocked from further use until resolved.

To Borrow a Museum Pass

  • When planning a visit please call the museum ahead of time to check hours.
  • Carefully read the museum description of what the pass allows for admission.
  • One pass can be reserved a week in advance and can be borrowed for 3 days, no renewals.
  • To pick up a pass patrons must be 18 years and older (proof required).
  • Place a reserve/hold by telephoning us directly during library hours.  Please do not place a reserve/hold by email or via voice message.
  • Passes borrowed from this library must be returned to the Bedford Hills Free Library during open hours.
  • Passes returned in the book return will be subject to a $5.00 penalty plus late fees.
  • The pass, in its protective sleeve, if returned to another library will be subject to a $5.00 penalty plus late fees.
  • Late Fees: $5.00 per day, Maximum fine: $25.00.
  • Lost Pass: Individual pass subject to full replacement cost. Combination pass subject to highest subscription replacement cost for one museum.
