Event Details

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is about Pecola Breedlove, an eleven-year-old Black girl living in Ohio in the 1940s. Pecola dreams of having blue eyes because she believes they will make her beautiful and loved. Growing up in a society that values whiteness, she feels invisible and unloved. Her difficult family life and the cruelty she faces from others cause her to lose hope. By the end of the story, after enduring deep trauma, Pecola’s wish for blue eyes becomes a heartbreaking symbol of her loss of innocence and identity.
