Native Garden at the Library

It’s springtime at the Library and our new native pollinator garden is beginning to bloom.  Andrea Good, our designer, said “everything planted in November is coming up as planned and beautifully!”

Native gardens are becoming increasingly popular in the landscape world, with homeowners throughout the country seeking to create earth-friendly home gardens that support nature.

Working in partnership with groups including Healthy Yards and Bedford 2030, the Library provides information and inspires our community to take similar steps in their own yards to create a healthier and more sustainable environment.

During Bedford’s Earth Day Festival Andrea was on hand to speak to about 40 visitors who were curious to learn more.  She explained why we leave stalks up through the winter and leave the leaves on the ground around the plants; why it is important to plant native plants and to avoid the typical spring and fall “clean-up.”

It will take about three years for the plants at the Library to reach maturity and for the beds to fill in with flowering perennials.
